Ellis Heights Family Housing
Fort Riley, Kansas

Some interesting correspondence about Fort Riley then and now.

Thanks for inviting all comers to contact you!  This is non-commercial ... strictly personal ... nostalgic.  What is the location of the Ellis Heights Family Housing project at Ft. Riley?  And what are the Army building numbers given to the units?

I lived in family housing at Riley during a tour of duty in 1951 and 52, and I'm interested to know if what you are working on might be the project we lived in.  I can't find Ellis Heights on the maps of the reservation that I have.

Sorry for the long over due response to your inquiry.  There is only one Ellis Heights on Fort Riley, so it must be the same place.  It is a very large housing area that sits on the east side of Custer Hill.  I did a study on a design back in 1985(?) to renovate the existing housing.  From my study came a recommendation to replace the housing rather than try to rehabilitate it because it was in such disrepair and there were so many unknowns for a contractor.  After struggling with the renovation design for nearly 10 years, the Corps of Engineers finally decided that replacing the housing was a more economical (better value) decision.  So, in the early to mid 1990's, all of the existing Ellis Heights housing was torn down and replaced with new units (very attractive).

Thank you kindly, Mr. Robinson.  Frank Haus, my Fort Riley buddy from the early 1950s, will also be happy to have your information.  I suspect that though the old post has changed dramatically in a half-century, Frank and I could reorient in just a couple of days.
